Product leader in educational technology

I design learning around the real job — then use AI to build it and prove it.

I'm a product leader in education technology. For the last few years I've led innovation and the ground-up rebuild of the IT programs at Western Governors University — redefining what students actually have to prove they can do, then rebuilding the courses and assessments around that. Before WGU I was a product manager at Udacity, and before that a teacher and district technology lead. Fourteen years in education, most of it spent on the messy, hands-on part: making learning work at scale.

What I care about now is using AI to build education faster and better. I've built an AI content pipeline on Claude that moves a course from concept to sign-off in a fraction of the time it used to take, and work-based simulations where students do realistic jobs — real tools, real deliverables, AI personas they have to communicate with — instead of bubbling in answers on a test. The through-line is the same one I've had since the classroom: define what competence looks like, build the assessment that proves it, then build the content that gets people there.

What I do

Building learning that works like the job

The through-line across every role: define what competence looks like, build the assessment that proves it, then build the content that gets people there — now with AI compressing the middle.

Product leadership at scale

Led a ground-up rebuild of four IT programs and 22 courses — a five-person core team with fifteen to twenty more working in parallel — serving thousands of active students.

AI-built content pipeline

Designed a content pipeline on Claude that compresses course development from months toward weeks — with human gates kept where machine judgment isn't reliable yet.

Assessment that mirrors the job

Work-based simulations and performance assessments students can revise and resubmit — they do the real work, not a multiple-choice proxy for it.

First-of-its-kind programs

Helped launch WGU's first product management master's degree, and modernized IT degrees that had drifted out of date.

Your most brilliant expert might be your worst teacher

The first lesson came back as a notebook full of Python that a student had no chance of following. Breaking a problem back down is a separate skill from being good at it, and most of us with expertise have never been asked to learn it.

Nobody taught me how to teach. The classroom did.

I prepared for years to teach. None of it stuck until a room of teenagers, a week I couldn't plan for, and later a stack of scenario cards taught me the job. Why experience is the real teacher — and why we have to build it on purpose.

Stop testing students. Let them do the job.

Everyone called him lazy — until he got to solve a real problem instead of pass a test, and floored the room. Why I stopped testing students and started having them do the job.
